Salary Database Available The Salary Database contains wage and employment data for U.S.-based technical writers. Members can access the Salary Database free of charge on the STC website. NEW: STC Members Receive Software Discounts MadCap Software and ComponentOne used the 2008 Technical Communication Summit as a platform to announce they would offer discounts on products to STC members. July/August Intercom Posted The July/August issue of Intercom has been posted to the STC Web site Opening For Magazine Editor At STC After eight years of working on Intercom, the last year as editor, Ed Rutkowski is taking on the new challenge of being the magazine editor at another association. The open editor position at STC will be advertised in the Washington area and through association and publishing channels. The Business of Technical Communication: "Breaking Through the Glass Ceiling" (May 2008) In 1979, Katherine Lawrence and Marianne Schreiber of Hewlett-Packard first coined the term "glass ceiling" to describe the barriers for career advancement that women face in male-dominated companies. But there is another type of glass ceiling that we don't like to talk much about. Telling Our Powerful Story With increasing demand for technical products, the technical communication field has grown. What used to be the strict discipline of creating and editing policies and manuals has now exploded into a rich field of communicating in many media as well as performing user analysis, applying usability methods, creating e-learning, and much more. European Scholar Selected as Editor of STC's Journal Menno D.T. de Jong, PhD has been selected as the new Editor-in-Chief of <em>Technical Communication,</em> the quarterly, peer-reviewed journal of the Society for Technical Communication. STC Immediate Past President to Lead Delegation to China STC members have been invited to join Immediate Past President Linda Oestreich on a two-week professional and cultural program in China from October 19-31, 2008. People to People Citizen Ambassador Programs, a nonpolitical, private-sector organization founded by President Eisenhower in 1956, is developing the trip for technical communicators to meet with their colleagues in several cities in China. The costs of roundtrip airfare from Los Angeles, hotel, group transportation, meetings, most meals, and cultural activities are estimated to be $5,295; interested participants are responsible for paying their own way.
